Frozen pipes and sudden bursts spike when temperatures plunge. These practical steps help Lubbock homeowners protect plumbing, know when to call for help, and avoid thousands in water damage.

Lubbock winters might be dry, but hard freezes still happen—and when they do, exposed pipes on outside walls, in attics, or in unheated garages are at risk. A burst pipe can dump hundreds of gallons of water into walls and ceilings before you notice. A little preparation goes a long way.

Before the Freeze

  • Disconnect hoses and insulate outdoor spigots.
  • Seal gaps near penetrations where cold air enters crawl spaces or rim joists.
  • Know the location of your main water shutoff and confirm it turns freely.
  • Open cabinet doors on exterior walls so warm room air reaches under-sink piping.

During Sub-Freezing Nights

When forecasts dip into the teens, letting a pencil-thin stream of water run overnight on vulnerable fixtures can prevent pressure buildup in freezing lines. Prioritize the furthest taps from your water entry.

If you lose water flow to a single fixture, avoid blasting it open—ice may be blocking the line. Warm the surrounding area gently with air—not an open torch—and call a licensed plumber if you suspect a split.

After the Thaw

Check ceilings, walls, and crawlspaces for new stains or drips. Corrosion at fittings sometimes shows up only after ice damage weakens the pipe. If you hear hissing, see wet drywall, or smell mustiness, shut the water off at the main and request emergency service.
